Asset-based IMCs can “size the fleet to the business they need,” a second Midwest intermodal executive explained. “Whereas in any rail ramp you see shared pool containers not being used most weeks.” Large IMCs use a term called “box turns” to measure how many containers are being used and how quickly they can be emptied and moved to the next shipper.
